The Challenge

The origins of forest fires in the region where we work are multiple but most often are due to the renewal of grazing areas, the explosion or leak of charcoal kilns, or the clearing of crop fields using fire. All these activities are prohibited within the extent of the Protected Area. Fires spread rapidly out of control and often the perpetrators can not be directly identified. All activities for clearing crop fields in or outside the Protected Area must have authorization from the forestry administration and stipulate in this authorization all the necessary conditions required before burning, among other things the availability of people allowed to control the fire in the area to be cleared. These conditions are often neglected and the practice of setting fires as clearing tools has become anarchic and a source of major forest fires.

Urgent Solutions

Combine the efforts of the forestry administration and FBM as well as the members of the committee to enforce the regulations governing the use of fire as tools for clearing agricultural areas. We need enforcement actions and more intense patrolling by FBM around the Protected Area so that fires are detected before they reach the forests and as last resort fire fighting equipment to put out fires.

Why your donation matters

The local community committee is actively fighting against zebu (cattle) rusttlers and forest fires. The committee members of this area need to receive training on resolving social conflicts and enforcing taboos that prevent forest degradation. Articles relating to the use of fire, the origins of uncontrolled fires, clearing of crop fields without authorization from authority, and forest clearing are well stipulated in this region. During this dry period (from July to December), fire and its damage are everywhere, both in farmland and the Protected Area. The fire points recorded since August 2023 in our region have far exceeded those recorded over the last five years. The loss of forest cover outside the Corridor is enormous and this adds more pressure on the forest inside the Protected Area, such as finding wood to produce charcoal.
